In 1971, the University Computer Centre was established with the installation of an IBM 1130 computing system. The teaching of computer sciences started from the session 1971-72 with the introduction of one year Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Sciences (PGDCS) with an intake of ten students. Two sessions later, i.e., from the session 1973-74, one year professional course called Diploma In Electronic Data Processing and Machines Operation (EDP) was started to impart training on Unit Record Machines to improve the career opportunities of working people.

In 1980, one of the first in India, VAX 11/780 systems was purchased from DEC (USA) and installed in this university.

With the increase in computer awareness and installation of computing systems in various organizations in the country and elsewhere, the need of computer professionals, well versed in programming was realized and therefore, a one year Diploma in Computer Programming (DCP) was started from session 1982-83 with an intake of 10 students.

In the summer of 1982, University Grants Commission's (UGC) standing committee visited the Computer Centre and it recommended and approved two new courses, a three year Masters in Computer Science and Application (MCA) and a one year Post B.Sc. Diploma in Computer Science and Application (PDCA) in place of earlier PGDCS course, along with the faculty positions, technical staff and initial grants. These courses were started from the session 1983-84 with an intake 20 students in each course initially, which was subsequently raised to full sanction strength of 30 in each.

Currently the Department of Computer Science is conducting the following courses:
