Sir Syed Ahmad Khan
Aligarh Muslim University was established in 1920 by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, with a view of imparting modern education to the youth.
He was one of the earliest champions of modern education.Endowed with enormous mental and physical resources, he strove throughout his life to lift his people out of the rut of traditionalism and orthodoxy.
Since its establishment, AMU has given professionals in various fields to this world. The Aligarh Muslim University has the previlege of honouring the first life member of its student union, the father of nation, Mahatma Gandhi and its first graduate Mr. Ishwari Prasad.
It has also produced many renowned personalities, like Dr. Zakir Hussain, former president of India and Mr. Abdul Ghayoom, president of Maldives.
This is a premier centrally funded university with several faculties and maintained institutions of higher learning.
It provides excellent opportunities for instruction and research in a wide spectrum of disciplines.
It has 12 faculties namely Arts, Social Sciences, Sciences, Life Sciences, Commerce, Engineering & Technology, Medicine, Unani Medicine, Law, Agriciultural Sciences, Management Studies and Theology.
There is a strong international flavour to the university, attracting students from all over the world, specially from West Asia, Africa and South east Asia.
A unique feature of this university is its residential character, where students reside together irrespective of their caste, creed and colour.
This enables the students not only to study but also to live together, to participate in extra-curricular activities and become part of a co-operative community of work and service.
